Consistent good quality marking is essential to providing robust, reliable and readable Data Matrix codes. Data Matrix coding technology is extremely robust and will mean that you can read damaged codes but this must not be a substitute for delivering the best quality mark at the time of marking. Codes do not improve over their life so it is essential to achieve the best quality mark at the time that the item is uniquely identified.

For 25 years Siemens Acuity CiMatrix have pioneered and promoted the benefits of verification as a means to control Data Matrix marking quality. Only in recent years have organisations begun to realise its importance in delivering a reliable readable code that can be read and decoded.

A number of standards are emerging and it is likely that these will converge over the coming years. Depending on the industry the following verification standards apply for Data Matrix coding:

• ISO 15415
• IAQG SAE9132 verification
• Siemens DPM Verification™
